At 14 years old, Sophia had been surrendered by her family because they could no longer care for her due to a move. The shelter’s founder, Casey Newton, revealed that Sophia’s owners had driven to multiple shelters in search of someone who could take her in. Sadly, the shelter happened to be their last stop.

Casey described how the owners showed no emotion while leaving Sophia. It was as if they were getting rid of an unwanted piece of furniture or a piece of clothing that no longer fit. The sadness on Sophia’s face was evident as she realized that her family had abandoned her – the face of a 14-year-old dog who had just lost her home.

“To see Sophia’s reaction as the car drove away – wondering ‘Where are you going?’” Casey shared. “I think that is the hardest part because we see it so often. It is so sad.”
