Early Years and DifficultiesClint Eastwood, who was born in 1930 amid the Great Depression, had a rocky road to fame. Growing up with a steelworker father and a family that traveled frequently, he encountered numerous challenges. Eastwood, however, distinguished out from an early age with his exceptional physical height, standing tall at 6 feet 4 inches and earning the moniker “Samson” from infancy.

A Scary ExperienceClint Eastwood worked as a lifeguard in Seattle after high school before being inducted into the United States Army in 1950. But few people are aware of a lesser-known period in his life. Eastwood was 21 years old when he became a passenger aboard a World War II-era Naval plane that crashed in the Pacific.

He was stuck in the water, swimming for miles towards the shore, unsure if he would survive. Reflecting on the terrible event, he subsequently stated, “I remember thinking, ‘well, 21 is not as long as a person wants to live.’”

Making Use of Personal ExperienceClint Eastwood’s experience in the Pacific was essential later in his career. As a director, he directed “Sully: Miracle on the Hudson,” starring Tom Hanks, in 2016.

The film portrayed US Airways Flight 1549’s remarkable emergency landing on the Hudson River in 2009, in which all 155 passengers and crew survived. “I suppose having been in a similar situation as the pilot, I would have risked a water landing rather than go somewhere where there’s no runway,” Eastwood said, relying on his own experience.

Captain Sully is a hero. The amazing landing was not the only factor that captivated Eastwood. The aftermath and Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger’s character definitely impressed him.

Sully’s ability to remain calm, think quickly on his feet, and solve problems without panicking made an indelible impression on me. Eastwood felt the dichotomy between Sully’s judgments and the investigators’ questioning of his conduct riveting, making it an ideal story for the big screen.
